Pacific Defense Awarded USN Contract for AI/ML enabled EW systems for Tactical-Edge Deployment
EL SEGUNDO, Calif.-- Pacific Defense, the leader in C5ISR Modular Open Suite of Standards (CMOSS) products and integrated mission systems, has received notification from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) of a $9.1M contract award for the development, integration, and demonstration of an Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) enabled common Electronic Warfare (EW) sensor-effector capability. This effort aligns with Dr. Waleed Barnawi’s Expeditionary Cyber/EW and Naval Information Warfare programs and leverages prior investments by the United States Department of Defense and Pacific Defense, in the United States Army’s CMOSS and the Open Group’s Sensor Open Systems Architecture™ (SOSA) Standards.
The demonstration of distributed AI capabilities, including autonomous cyber-EW effects, will prove out ONR’s Ubiquitous Edge distributed software architecture on multi-function edge nodes. The SOSA aligned, modular design of the edge nodes and software enables the creation of a secure EW software defined radio (SDR) multi-function operating environment, accelerating the ability to rapidly and cost effectively integrate new hardware and software on a recurring basis.
“Pacific Defense, alongside our partners at Perceptronics Solutions and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), is focused on developing and fielding tactical edge-based AI/ML Cyber-EW capabilities to enhance system performance, minimize operator workload, and address emerging threats, providing theater-level superiority to our warfighters,” said Frank Pietryka, VP of EW, SIGINT, and Autonomy at Pacific Defense.
"Carnegie Mellon University is pleased to play a role in enabling the Navy and Marine Corps to access and rapidly transition cutting edge research in AI/ML to the tactical edge through this groundbreaking program," added Theresa Mayer, Vice President for Research and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering.
Led by Pacific Defense, with support from Perceptronics Solutions and CMU, the awarded contract has an 18-month period of performance running through October 2026 with primary places of work in El Segundo, CA, Nashua, NH, Fairfax, VA, and Philadelphia, PA.
